I'm certified as a USBC coach how do I start & manage my own business as a bowling coach ?

There are four bowling centers in my area. There is high school bowling in my state. I want to give private lessons & group lessons.

Before you start, I would take the time and expense to properly organize your operation. How serious do you want to be with this?

If you want to get into this professionally then I would seriously consider spending the money and shielding yourself from liability thorough an S Corporation or LLC. This is in case someone gets hurt during a lesson, it will limit your liability and they can't go after you personally. I would talk to a CPA or attorney in your area for advice.

In terms of managing, you will want to keep track of your revenue and expenses. I highly suggest getting an accounting package for this. It not only lets you see how you are doing, but it makes your job easier come tax time for you or the tax preparer to do your Schedule C (or K-1).

Quickbooks has a piece of software called Simple Start which I still believe is 100% free and will do just fine for you. The more expensive versions are only more beneficial if you have a lot of fixed assets and a more complicated operation.

If you want to keep a home office for this and deduct the expenses, then you have to abide by strict home office deduction rules that a CPA or tax professional can explain better than I can here.

You will want to try to get your word out. Bowling centers are a good place to start. Maybe they will let you put your card up and/or advertise lessons. Yard signs are excellent tools as well.

As you build up rapport with your clients, then your business will grow, mature and be a great success.

Anyways, those are a few tips. I hope that helped.

seat size-is a business class seat bigger than a coach seat?

and is a first class seat bigger than a business seat? I keep getting conflicting answers…if business & coach are the same size, why the $$ difference?

Yes, and yes.

First class has better service than business class, and bigger seats. Business class seats are bigger than economy, and you get better service/meal options.

On airlines such as the Qantas a380, you get a suite to yourself in first class. In business class, you get a large seat that folds into a bed, but it isn't as private as a suite. And in Economy, there is the normal seat layout.

What is the difference between coach and business seats on a plane? Do you have more room in business?

Coach is the basic seat. It means you are seated in a three-seat space, side by side. Services are bare-bones. If you want to listen to the on-board movie you have to buy the earphones. If you want lunch you have to buy it. If you want a drink you can only get one at mealtimes, and you might have to pay for it. Alcohol is not included either.

Business class is often confused with First Class. You get everything that the Coach class gets, but it's folded into the price. So you pay a lot more for your ticket, but you can drink like a fish, and you get an adequate meal to go along with it. Your seats will be two across instead of three, meaning you have a lot of room. Oh, also, the rows are spaced further apart so that you have actual leg room. The cabin space is smaller, and the flight attendant has fewer passengers to tend to so you get better service.

Again, if you want to fly business class, be prepared to pay for it. You get all the perks, but you pay big-perk money for them.

My advice, stick with coach. First class passengers arrive there the same time that you do. It does not make the plane fly faster if you are in Business class.

Has anyone ever gotten a free flight upgrade from coach to business or first class? How did you do it?

It happens, but it is very rare. The airlines give free upgrades to their frequent fliers first; usually there's enough of them on any one flight to fill up first/business class. But sometimes, very rarely, there's not. In that case, the coach class would have to be overbooked and some people would either be denied boarding or, if there's space in first/business, they'd be bumped up instead of being bumped off. There is a strict heirarchy of passengers that controls the order that they get bumped up in. They will first upgrade members of their own frequent flyer program who have not earned enough miles to be considered "elite" (for example you need 25,000 miles to reach the Silver elite level which is the lowest, so they would upgrade someone who had only earned 20,000 miles) and for those who have reached Elite level in their partner airlines' programs (like someone who has Gold level on Air Canada might get upgraded on a United flight because they are both in the Star Alliance). If they are still overbooked in coach, they will upgrade based on price paid for the ticket, with the highest fares being upgraded first. So the average traveller who flies a few times a year (or less) and sticks with the cheapest ticket out there has very little chance of being upgraded. The only exception is, if you are scheduled to fly and your flight is overbooked, when the airline asks for volunteers, you can volunteer to give up your seat (which gets you a free flight later on) and ask if you can be rebooked into a first class flight— sometimes that works, sometimes there is not a first class seat available on a later flight.

It used to be that you could show up dressed nicely and give a story about how it was your birthday or anniversary or what-not and sometimes get upgraded but that doesn't happen any more.

How do I get an upgrade from economy/coach to business/fist class?

flying from DFW to Edinburgh.

Buy a first class ticket, or pay the difference in fare. If you're a frequent flier with the specific airline you happen to be flying to Edinburgh on, cash in some miles and treat yourself to first class.
No upgrades into buisness or first class on International flights…sorry.
